Rapiq Portable Barbecue
For my final year project at BU I designed a portable barbecue aimed specifically at the kayaking market. The Rapiq portable barbecue is a butane powered portable camping stove with a grilling surface that aims to give it’s user the experience of using a barbecue without having to purchase several disposable barbecues. The design has been specifically optimised to the needs of kayakers and canoers to allow for easy storage within a small hull compartment as well as being buoyant and water resistant.
The external casing is composed of impact resistant polymers as well as rugged clips to ensure the safety of the internal heating element when not in use. A seal is also used to increase water resistance and allow the internal space of the product to act as buoyancy. The plastic casing is protected by a sandwich layer of composite fabric to ensure the heat of the grill does not compromise the properties of the outside casing. The Intelligent Outdoors brand I created in A-level was re-designed to improve the overall aesthetics and feel of the brand. |

Emergency Hiking Beacon
|
During my second year at University we were given a project to design a warning light that would use a pre-made PCB layout, consisting of a PIC and LED's. We were to solder the components onto the board and code a basic lighting program.
I chose to Design an attention attracting light hat could be used by hikers and climber to attract rescuers in the event of an accident or injury. I used research provided by the UK mountain rescue to see what accidents people get into and what the average time for rescue was. I identified that the major cause for long recovery times was due to the rescuers being unable to locate the injured or lost. The program for this device could shine a bright solid red LED light or could alternate flashing lights to attract even more attention. The rugged casing was constructed around a lightweight aluminium skeleton to improve stability and increase its resistance to drops. I designed the casing using the aesthetic styling of the Bear Grylls range of camping and survival tools. |
Ski Goggles
The major project for my AS level was to improve an existing product that we had experience with. I re-designed a pair of ski goggles to provide better peripheral vision and have a smaller profile on the users face. The design went through several iterations as my skills for solidworks developed and i did more testing on existing goggles.
The final design was 3D printed and assembled using laser cut and fabricated pieces. |
